All researchers (listed below) who are planning to conduct research projects involving human (participation / data / samples) must seek research ethics approval before data collection: 

1. UiTM staff
2. UiTM student
3. External researcher who wishes to conduct research involving the participation of UiTM staff/ students and/or in UiTM premises 

What types of research requires research ethics approval?

Research that involves:

1. human participation/ data/ sample
2. the usage of human by-product
3. has a physical/emotional impact on the study participants

When is the ideal time to apply for research ethics approval?

Research ethics approval must be applied: 

1. Two (2) months prior to the start of the data collection process
2. Postgraduate students should apply after the research proposal defence
3. Undergraduate students may apply during the research methodology course (research proposal preparation) or after the proposal defence.

How do I apply for exemption from ethical review?

1. For Undergraduate and Masters Students (Coursework Mode only): Please fill out the Application for Exemption from Ethical Review (ERC 4), and send it to the appointed Coordinator for verification, before submitting the form to the ERC Secretariat of your respective College/Branch/Faculty.
2. For Postgraduate Students (Research / Mix Mode), Staff and External Researchers: Please fill out the Application for Exemption from Ethical Review (REC 11) and send it to the College/Branch/Faculty Research Committee for verification, before submitting the form to the UiTM REC Secretariat. 

What types of risks are examined in research ethics applications?

1. Minimal risk research (MR);
2. More than minimal risk research (MMR);
3. Research exempted from ethical review (*research involving human data).

 *Subject to the conditions outlined in the ERC 4/REC 11 forms

How long will it take for ethical approval to be granted (from the UiTM REC)?

One (1) to two (2) months, provided that the application does not need substantial amendments by the applicants, during the screening and evaluation process. Please refer to the SOP outlined in REC 1 (Flowchart I & II).

Is there an expiration date for the approval?

What actions should be performed if there are changes/amendments to the research following ethics approval?

Please send the following form(s) to the REC Secretariat after it has been verified at the College/Branch/Faculty Research Committee level. Changes involving:

1. REC 2 / REC 4: Fill out the REC 10 form and other related forms (e.g., REC 2 and/or REC 4) that have been amended (highlight the changes in yellow).
2. Research Membership: Fill out the REC 7
3. Approval timeframe (request for extension) - Fill out the REC 13

How should a study progress report be submitted?

How can I notify the REC that my research has been completed/ended? How do I submit the research's final report?

Is research ethical approval for human studies mandatory at UiTM?

According to Dasar Etika Penyelidikan Yang Melibatkan Penyertaan Manusia, the application for ethical approval was enforced on May 9, 2019.

What are the implications of carrying out research (involving humans) without first obtaining research ethics approval?

1. UiTM will not be liable for any ethical issues arising from the research.
2. Difficulties in publishing a research article in a high-impact journal (where the journal's policy requires evidence/research ethics approval code).

All journals published by a publisher that Beall's list identifies as being involved in predatory publishing practices are also regarded as predatory journals. According to the email from RMC dated June 15, 2023, PYPA will not cover publications made in journals linked to predatory publishing practices (for more information, see https://library.uitm.edu.my/en/research-ptar/predatory-journals-ptar).

If the conference is organized in 2022 but the proceeding is to be published in 2023, am I still eligible to apply for PYPB?

I already made the payment to the DKP of RM30 for the first month. Am I still allowed to apply for PYPB, or should I make the payment for the six months before I submit my application? We also offer article publication charge financial support (PYPA) for academicians who wish to publish in the Scopus and WoS-indexed journals. However, the payment must be made to the publisher by the applicant, and PYPA reimbursement will be applied once the article is successfully indexed in Scopus or WoS. Does the permanent staff member who is on study leave count as active?

If the publisher is identified by Beall’s list as associated with predatory publishing practices, are all journals published by that publisher considered predatory journals, or will only some be considered predatory journals? I searched via the ERA website, and I found that the journal is listed as an ERA-indexed journal.

If the publisher is identified by Beall’s list as associated with predatory publishing practices, all journals published by that publisher are considered predatory journals. The publisher of those journals is responsible for ensuring the quality of the publication. While ERA only lists the journals, they evaluate at the time. Therefore, there is no guarantee that ERA-indexed journals are not associated with predatory publishing practices. If I publish the article in a journal that is categorised as a predatory journal, can I pay for APC using my Lestari grant?

It stated that the Beall's list has not been maintained or updated since January 2017, and anything included now was done by anonymous researchers. This means anything included in the Beall's list after 2017 was not really verified by official body, thus is this news reliable or trustable?

What are the conditions for the appointment of the Chief Editor and Managing Editor's position?

The appointment criteria for Chief Editor and Managing Editor are as follows:

1. The H-index minimum for the Chief Editor of science and technology journals is 7, for business and accounting journals is 5, and for arts and humanities is 3. This criteria does not apply to the managing editor or copy editor.
2. The Chief Editor and Managing Editor candidates must have a ResearcherID account and update verified peer reviews in their ResearcherID profile. This criterion does not apply to the copy editor.
3. All editorial candidates must be endorsed by Rector/Dean/Director. A supporting letter must be included in the application documents.
