Who should apply for research ethics approval?
All researchers (listed below) who are planning to conduct research projects involving human (participation / data / samples) must seek research ethics approval before data collection:
- UiTM staff
- UiTM student
- External researcher who wishes to conduct research involving the participation of UiTM staff/ students and/or in UiTM premises
What types of research requires research ethics approval?
Research that involves:
- human participation/ data/ sample
- the usage of human by-product
- has a physical/emotional impact on the study participants
When is the ideal time to apply for research ethics approval?
Research ethics approval must be applied:
- Two (2) months prior to the start of the data collection process
- Postgraduate students should apply after the research proposal defence
- Undergraduate students may apply during the research methodology course (research proposal preparation) or after the proposal defence.
How do I apply for ethics approval?

- Application through Research Ethics Depository (RED) System- https://www.recuitm.org/red (Starting from December 2022, all applications must be submitted via the RED system. Please contact the Research Committee at your College/Branch/Faculty).
How do I apply for exemption from ethical review?
- For Undergraduate and Masters Students (Coursework Mode only): Please fill out the Application for Exemption from Ethical Review (ERC 4), and send it to the appointed Coordinator for verification, before submitting the form to the ERC Secretariat of your respective College/Branch/Faculty.
- For Postgraduate Students (Research / Mix Mode), Staff and External Researchers: Please fill out the Application for Exemption from Ethical Review (REC 11) and send it to the College/Branch/Faculty Research Committee for verification, before submitting the form to the UiTM REC Secretariat.
What types of risks are examined in research ethics applications?
- Minimal risk research (MR);
- More than minimal risk research (MMR);
- Research exempted from ethical review (*research involving human data).
*Subject to the conditions outlined in the ERC 4/REC 11 forms
How long will it take for ethical approval to be granted (from the UiTM REC)?
One (1) to two (2) months, provided that the application does not need substantial amendments by the applicants, during the screening and evaluation process. Please refer to the SOP outlined in REC 1 (Flowchart I & II).
Is there an expiration date for the approval?
Yes. The approval period is stated in the approval letter.What actions should be performed if there are changes/amendments to the research following ethics approval?

How should a study progress report be submitted?
Please fill out the REC 6 form (for clinical trial only) and submit the form to the REC Secretariat
How can I notify the REC that my research has been completed/ended? How do I submit the research's final report?
Fill out the REC 8 form and submit the form to the REC Secretariat
Is research ethical approval for human studies mandatory at UiTM?
According to Dasar Etika Penyelidikan Yang Melibatkan Penyertaan Manusia, the application for ethical approval was enforced on May 9, 2019.
What are the implications of carrying out research (involving humans) without first obtaining research ethics approval?
- UiTM will not be liable for any ethical issues arising from the research.
- Difficulties in publishing a research article in a high-impact journal (where the journal's policy requires evidence/research ethics approval code).
